"There is an overrepresentation of western ways of knowing in Indigenous child welfare"

History, Mission & Vision

History

Altaya Specialized Home and Support Services (ASHSS) emerged in response to the Province of British Columbia’s call for responses for the Specialized Home and Support Service (SHSS) program. The Director, driven by a vision to reshape staffed residential services for improved support to families and communities with youth in care, nurtured the roots of ASHSS through years of dedicated behind-the-scenes work while providing contracted services and pursuing continued research in the field.

Mission

Our mission is to provide high-quality, relationship-based services and support to children and youth with varying needs, as well as their families, to improve their well-being, build their inherent capacity and promote the preservation of families. We strive to be innovative in developing new services to meet the needs of young people, families, and funders. We strongly believe that it is a privilege to be invited to work alongside a young person and their family. You will know we are doing good work because those we walk alongside will share this with you themselves.

Vision

Altaya Specialized Homes and Support Services (ASHSS) envisions a world where children, youth and families are…

● supported holistically and in the context of their unique culture and connections;

● provided with personalized supports that strengthen their ability to succeed after leaving our services;

● honored as experts in their lives during all steps of care planning; and

● provided with honest and accountable care from a competent and committed team.

It is a great privilege to be invited to work alongside a young person and their family. We deeply honour the opportunity to get to be a part of your story.

Principles

Cultural Competency

Cultural Competency

Cultural Competency

We must strive to be culturally competent by taking the time to learn from the Indigenous communities we work alongside. This includes learning about specific history, customs, child reading practices, and protocols, and taking steps to incorporate these elements into program and service delivery. We strongly believe that communities know best, and our goal is to support the capacity of services they want to offer to their young people and families. Our care teams take the time to critically reflect on power imbalances, institutional discrimination, and colonial relationships to enhance the way we practice.

Positionality

Cultural Competency

Cultural Competency

We must acknowledge the complexities of our positionalities while working with a family or community. We give weight to how our lived experience influences the way we interact with others. This requires an analysis of individual bias and privilege and relies on engaging in self-reflection. This practice recognizes that it is our responsibility to tackle oppressive practices that affect the well-being of the family and communities we work with.

Wisdom

Cultural Competency

Truth Telling

We must acknowledge and incorporate the lived expertise of children, youth, families, and elders. This requires providing the opportunities for the people we work alongside to feel safe in expressing feedback, and taking the time to ensure that nation members are invited into the care circle. This practice takes a holistic approach- considering the physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being of young people and families- and it seeks to honor the agency and wisdom that community members inherently have.

Truth Telling

Sustainability

Truth Telling

We must invite each other to share our personal and professional needs and goals for the purpose of mutual learning and creating high-quality services. This includes creating space to hear all perspectives and recognizing that a circle is strengthened by the unique contributions of each member. We believe that providing a space where speaking your truth can contribute to the overall wellbeing of all of those involved.

Transparency

Sustainability

Sustainability

We must act with integrity, transparency and accountability to children, youth, families, communities, stakeholders, and ourselves. This requires providing opportunities for all people involved to engage in active feedback and collaboration in decision making. This practice recognizes the importance of mutual respect in a relationship, and it creates space to engage in effective dispute resolution.

Sustainability

Sustainability

Sustainability

We must strive to achieve long-term success and viability of the services provided. This includes protecting the safety, health, and welfare of colleagues, communities, stakeholders, and service users. We recognize the impact of caregiving, and the importance of these services existing and practicing in a good way.

Emergency Care

Child & Youth Community Home

Child & Youth Community Home

This service offers a safe landing spot for children and youth who must come into care on an urgent basis until a more suitable and long-term arrangement can be arranged. On a weekly basis, the young person and their care circle meet to determine their needs and desires going forward.

Child & Youth Community Home

Child & Youth Community Home

This program offers a secure, affectionate, and caring long term setting for young people with diverse needs. This option is chosen when other living arrangements are considered less supportive. Highly skilled caregivers provide unwavering support to young people in specialized long-term care, ensuring a safe and secure home environment.

Supported Caregiving

Supported Family Reunification

Supported Family Reunification

This program provides 24/7 support to both caregivers and young people in foster/community care. There are regular and scheduled respite and/or support workers to help with the role of caregiving, respite for families, and phone call/in-person always available. This program is built to fulfil the attachment needs of young people, even when they are safest when there are many adults available to care for them.

Supported Family Reunification

Supported Family Reunification

This program provides ongoing support to young people leaving bed-based services to be nurtured by their families. The young person’s existing youth worker may continue to support them and their family in their family home for several hours a week. Alternatively, family members may be able to move into the home the youth has been residing in for 1 to 6 months, while youth caregivers support the family unit 24/7 while they navigate this transition.

ASHSS is committed to providing services that meet the unique needs of families. We believe that communities should drive the development of new programs and we are here to support capacity to carry out these ideas.  Please reach out to discuss other creative contracted services.
